Governor Hogan announces $3.4 million in grant awards for crime reduction, expansion of Boys & Girls Clubs
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On Wednesday, Governor Larry Hogan announced $3.4 million in Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant awards for local projects that support efforts to reduce crime throughout the state of Maryland.
We’re told half the funding will go towards the Maryland Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs for the expansion of clubs in areas identified through the Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network initiative. The $1.7 million awarded to the clubs will benefit an estimated 5,000 young people in Maryland by supporting evidence-based and evidence-informed youth development programs at nearly 40 club locations. Funding will also support expanded services, new club locations, and youth development programs in several counties, including Dorchester.
The remaining funding will be awarded to local government agencies for a range of initiatives to benefit communities statewide. Locally, funding will be dispersed as follows:
- Somerset County Sheriff’s Office: $296,335 for Multi-Agency NIBRS Compliant RMS
- Salisbury Police Department: $15,000 for NIBRS Compliance Training; $100,000 for Exploring Predictive Policing with Machine Learning
- Ocean City Police Department: $66,000 for City Watch Cameras on North Baltimore Avenue
- Caroline County Sheriff’s Office: $75,930 for Police Body Camera Digital Video Project
- Town of Vienna: $28,990 for Video Evidence Program
- Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office: $19,592 for Technology and Equipment Upgrade for Community Support and Policing
- Cambridge Police Department: $8,000 for Officer Wellness – Stress Treatment
- Hurlock Police Department: $9,000 for Safety Training and Equipment Program
- Fruitland Police Department: $34,360 for Mobile Surveillance Trailer
- Town of Pittsville: $5,035 for Community Violence Prevention Training and Equipment Program
- Pocomoke City Police Department: $15,750 for Weapons and Drug Trafficking Reduction Initiative
- Town of Berlin: $18,000 for Palm Scanner Purchase
