Cambridge band director raising money for new uniforms, drums

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The band director at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School is reaching out to the community to raise money for new uniforms and equipment.

Ray Washington is known locally as having started the marching band at Maple Elementary School. Now at the high school, he’s looking to raise $50,000 for 140 new band uniforms and an additional $20,000 for marching percussion. He says even though band is not happening as it normally would because of COVID-19 closures, he wants to prepare now so that they have everything once they get the green light.

“We’ve been needing new uniforms for a while and it’s about time that we do whatever it takes to make sure these kids can get these new uniforms. You’re just going to feel better as a band when you travel and when you’re competing like at Battle of the Bands or different parades,” says Ray Washington, the Band Director at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.

Washington says Dorchester County’s public school system is always very supportive but they can only give them so much financial assistance which is why he’s reaching out to the community for help.

To donate, you can call the Dorchester County Board of Education at 410-228-4747 or Cambridge-South Dorchester High School at 410-228-9224 and tell the receptionist you’d like to donate for the new band uniforms.

The CSD Music Booster is also putting on the following fundraising efforts:

  • Discount Cards: They have $5 discount cards on sale that will give you discounted prices to local businesses listed on the back of the card.
  • Hyatt Raffle: It costs $10 per raffle entry for a weekend for two at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay.
