Bayhealth applies to add more beds to Sussex campus

SUSSEX CO., Del. – Bayhealth officials say they’re looking to add two dozen medical surgical beds to their Sussex Health Campus because it’s been extremely busy.

Terry Murphy, Bayhealth’s President and CEO, says they sent an application to the state to get those plans approved and they expect to hear back in November. Murphy believes they submitted enough data to prove this expansion is needed and therefore they are confident the state will approve it. Currently, they have 135 beds at that facility which opened about a year and a half ago.

“Basically we have the shelled in floor already for the campus and this would really just be a building out the needed additional beds. So it’s been already designed and it’s ready to go,” says Murphy.

Murphy also says Bayhealth will start graduate medical education in July of 2021, as a way to address the shortage of physicians in the area. They’re hoping that program will help them recruit and retain physicians, encouraging them to start their careers here and then stay in the community.
