Wor-Wic to use grant funding to provide scholarships for students

SALISBURY, Md. – Wor-Wic Community College is taking advantage of the funding they received from Maryland to provide students with critical scholarships. Recently, Governor Larry Hogan announced that the state would be providing about $10 million in grants to community colleges to enhance workforce development and provide employment opportunities. Wor-Wic will be receiving more than $400,000. They say they’ll use this money to provide needs-based scholarships for students seeking job training. They say a lot of continuing education students aren’t eligible for financial aid -which makes it harder for them to afford the training they need. Which is why they say this funding will be a game-changer.

“This is going to be a real infusion of funds into our needs-based scholarship fund for particularly workforce students to allow them to afford that truck driving training, learn to be a certified nursing assistant, study welding, those real core essential worker skills,” said Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Ruth Baker.

In a statement regarding the grant funding Governor Larry Hogan said, “Now more than ever, it is critical that we offer all Marylanders every opportunity to get the tools they need to stay competitive in the job market, both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.”
