Uncle remembers nephew after he was shot and killed at off campus DSU party

DOVER, Del. – The uncle of the Delaware State University student who was shot and killed on Sunday is speaking out.

David Redmond says his nephew, twenty-year old Devin Wright, was caught in crossfire at Schutte Park. Police say hundreds of other people were in attendance, most of whom were DSU students. Redmond describes his nephew as a “wonder” who was funny and Catholic School educated.

Redmond tells 47 ABC, he believes social media plays a big role in violent situations like this one, adding that this is a problem in every community.

“Everybody wants to one up the guy before him and everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame. Again it’s not just this community but every community in our country now having problems with handguns and violence especially with the young males,” says Redmond. “Most of these kids are college kids and we were all young ones but we have to do a better job at settling differences. I mean minor in fractions you stepped on my toe, you mean mugged me, you looked at my woman. We have to come up with a better way to settle these things. The problem in our community today is respect.”

A second person was injured in that shooting. A spokesperson for the university says, “DSU is profoundly saddened and troubled by the tragic death of Devin Wright and the event in connection with it. The University is working very hard to gather information around the incident.” However the University did not comment on the fact that this is the second party involving students this month where a shooting took place.
