UMES ranked 18th best historically Black institution in nation

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been ranked as the the nation’s 18th best historically Black institution.

The rankings were put out by U.S. News & World Report and UMES has gone up one spot from 19th place last year. UMES President Dr. Heidi Anderson credits the ranking to the improvement of their graduation rate which now stands at its highest in 20 years at 41 percent. She believes the improvement in their retention rate as well as alumni giving has helped as well.

“I think the other part is our reputation because this particular type of ranking is scored by other presidents and other chancellors around the country and our name is getting out there,” says UMES President Dr. Heidi Anderson.

Dr. Heidi Anderson says she’s proud of the progress they have made with their physician assistant program as well as the school of pharmacy building which is currently under construction. She has a goal of getting UMES to the Top 10 among institutions. Seventy-seven HBCUs were ranked in the latest survey.
