Police: Man shoots at skunk, hits person instead

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. – A Mardela Springs man was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly tried to shoot a skunk but hit a nearby person instead.

Just before 10 p.m., deputies were called to a residence in the 24000 block of Main Street Extended in Mardela Springs for a reported shooting. On arrival, deputies located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Further investigation revealed that 54-year-old Timothy McCourry Sr. was shooting at a skunk in the area. It is believed that McCourry did not have a safe backdrop and he shot in the direction of three victims, subsequently hitting one. Deputies say they believe McCourry did not intentionally shoot at the victim.

McCourry was arrested and charged with three counts of reckless endangerment. He was later released on his own recognizance.
