Delaware piloting new transportation app in Georgetown in 2021

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Thanks to a federal grant, the Delaware Transit Corporation will be piloting a new app in Georgetown next year.

The app is called Via Transportation and will help connect riders with public transportation. Officials say a common challenge for people in rural areas is actually getting to a bus stop. This app acts as a link between the person’s location and bus stops by connecting them with other transportation options. Officials tell 47 ABC, they hope it will increase ridership while also making transportation more accessible.

“So by opening the app they may be alerted that there is a nearby taxi company that is participating in the pilot and they can get a ride maybe that way to the nearest bus stop or they may be alerted that a paratransit vehicle has just picked up a neighbor and is also able to provide the ride for them via the app,” says Veronica Vanterpool, the Chief Innovation Officer for Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC).

Vanterpool says they selected Georgetown because it’s a rural community, an employment hub and is designated as a federal opportunity zone. The app is set to launch in the spring or summer of 2021.
