Cancelation of Return Day makes an impact on Sussex County community

GEORGETOWN, Del. – State leaders are expressing disappointment that this year’s Return Day event didn’t happen.

Return Day typically involves having community members and politicians gather in Georgetown to celebrate unity and patriotism with the burying of a hatchet.

Representative Ruth Briggs King says this year the event could have given people the chance to bring about positivity in a time where it’s so desperately needed.

However, she says there were simply too many obstacles this year such as the state not moving into Phase Three of reopening that made it too difficult to hold the event.

“People from both sides of the spectrum and from voters and nonvoters enjoy that sense of relief and celebration,” said Briggs King.

Briggs King says the cancellation of Return Day also had an impact on businesses that depend on it for revenue.
