The Brightside: Local kids start produce stand
LAUREL, Del. – If you ever find yourself driving on one of the back roads in Laurel, Delaware, you just might come across some pint-sized farmers.
At the beginning of the summer, the Jestice family started the Country Kids Produce stand. The kids mother, Caitlin, decided to start the stand when the usual summer activities were canceled.
Caitlin Jestice said, “Baseball was canceled, school was canceled, everything was canceled, so we thought it would be something fun for them to do.”
Jestice says her husband’s grandparents used to have a produce stand in Long Neck, but it was no longer in use.
“It was just stuck back in the woods and we decided that we would pull it out,” she explained.
Once Caitlin had her hands on the stand, she started a garden with her kids and began growing produce to later sell.
The kids are now in charge of opening the stand each day, stocking it with produce, and collecting money.
Jestice said, “They have grown a lot, they have gotten a lot more responsible.”
When you ask the kids what they enjoy most about the stand, they’ll tell you it’s quite literally the fruits of their labor.
Coleson Jestice said, “I love to eat all of it. I like to eat the cantaloupe!”
But what the kids don’t realize is they’re getting priceless time together in mother nature where they can get their hands dirty…and it’s that fun, carefree energy between siblings, and the produce, that keeps people coming back for more.
If you would like to pay a visit to the Country Kids Produce stand, they’re located on Pepper Pond Lane in Laurel. Their hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
