Sussex Academy senior helping communities access dental supplies through a dental drive

SUSSEX CO., Del.- From toothpaste to toothbrushes, Else Leebel, a senior at Sussex Academy,  is helping to get people in the community access to dental supplies if they are in need.

It’s all part of her senior project.

“She was so prepared, she’s definitely put a lot of time and thought into this project, for reaching out to the community and helping in an area that’s much needed right now,” Katherine Townsend, a general dentist and Else’s mentor, said.

Here’s how it works. Else collects dental supplies from donors from there she bags them and gives them to families.

Leebel said there is a growing need in the community for these dental supplies right now as many families don’t have the money to afford these items.

“Several families in the community can’t even basically have access to these items, it’s very hard for them to get, especially during this pandemic,” Leebel said.

Leebel said since starting the drive around a week ago the amount of support received is overwhelming.

The Food Bank of Delaware and Beebe Healthcare are even on board helping her deliver the items to families.

“It’s kinda just spread to like up North, a little bit down South, it’s been crazy with how everything’s kinda of, other communities not just locally, but other states and communities are wanting to help me,” Leebel said.

We’re told that there is also an educational aspect included in this drive as well.

“We are in the process of making pamphlets to also be included, that give like the overall general overview of the importance of brushing, flossing, and the importance of dental hygiene,” Leebel said.

Overall, both Townsend and Leebel hope to extend this project as far as it can go and continue to help those in need.

Else said her project will continue until the end of the month.

She is looking for items that include floss, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and mouth wash.
