Revamped defense brings new intensity to Ravens camp

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and the offense look to fly high once again in the 2020 season, but the difference-maker of this Ravens team could be the addition of a monster on the defensive line. That man is Calais Campbell.
The 6’8, 300-pound defensive end was plucked from Jacksonville for a fifth-round pick.
Campbell’s presence is already being felt at practice, and it’s a trade that could prove to be a steal for Baltimore.
Head Coach John Harbaugh had nothing but praise for the first-year Raven.
“He’s got a big personality, he’s a really caring guy, he’s a great leader, cares about his teammates, and family man. He’s just the total package, for sure.”
The Ravens also brought in Derek Wolfe from Denver, and used five selections in this year’s draft on defensive players.
The heavy investment was necessary after Baltimore’s super bowl dreams were dashed in January. The defense allowed over 200 yards on the ground to Derrick Henry and the Titans in their 28-12 playoff loss.
The revamped defense makes for an ultra competitive scrimmage on the field.
“They want us to compete, and they want us to be great for Sundays or Thursdays or Mondays. We’re trying to win, they’re keeping score right now, so it’s just like we’re playing against another team,” quarterback Lamar Jackson said.
The offense continued to show how explosive it can be as well, with big weapons for Jackson like Marquise Brown, and Mark Andrews. But until the games are played, no one really knows what to expect in the upcoming season.
“You don’t exactly know where you’re at until you play the game, and that’s the thing that’s going to be so interesting,” said Harbaugh. “The opening game will be like no other opening game in the history of NFL football. I don’t know if there’s ever been an opener without preseason games, without a sense of where our team is at.”
Baltimore kicks off their season against the Cleveland Browns at M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday, September 13.
