New Police Chief Pinned In Milton
MILTON, Del– Derrick Harvey officially became the new police chief after he was pinned in Milton today.
The Vice President of the town Kevin Kelly says Harvey is the type of officer that is needed for this job.
“He’s highly organized, he’s extremely professional police officer. He is responsive,” said Kelly.
Chief Derrick Harvey has a laundry list of accolades. He was the first black fire chief in Sussex County. He’s the current fire chief in Milton and top of all of that he now holds the prestigious title of being Milton’s first black police chief.
Derrick Harvey says that he has always known want he wanted to do with his life ever since he was a kid.
“I have a lot of feelings, all good because I have wanted to be a police officer my entire life when I was five or six when I went through the D.A.R.E. program in elementary school,” said Harvey.
Officials say that Chief Harvey has everything you could want in a public servant and his type of character is exactly what the town needs.
“He also has that kind of personality that manages to both be the person in charge and also someone who can be sympathetic- so it enables him to address a wide range of issues,” said Kelly.
Chief Harvey’s mother Thelma Harvey says this was a dream come true for her and their family.
“To see my son become chief is I think a mother’s dream, I don’t think I could’ve asked for anything better for him,” said Harvey.
Right now the department is down two officers so one of Harvey’s first goals is to get them back to full strength.
“I would simply like to move forward with just our community relationship and also try to get back up to staff where we should be so that we can provide the best service as possible,” said Harvey.
