Loggerhead Sea Turtles expected to hatch soon on Assateague Island

BERLIN, Md. – Assateague Island National Seashore just announced that the first of three federally protected Loggerhead Sea Turtle nests is expected to hatch soon.
Officials say because the hatching is imminent, a short term beach closure will be enforced and the bullpen will be temporarily moved starting August 19th. We’re told the purpose of the full beach closure is to reduce tire ruts and eliminate the risk of driving impacts to the tiny hatchlings and minimize light pollution near the site.
