“June and July we have had a huge increase in business,” : One Cambridge business is booming during the pandemic

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Snappers Waterfront Cafe and Tiki Bar in Cambridge said despite the pandemic,  business for them has been booming.

“June and July we have had a huge increase in business,” Laura Sydnor, General Manager of Snappers Waterfront Cafe and Tiki Bar, said.

Sydnor said June and July were the best months in terms of sales that they’ve had in years.

“Even when we couldn’t sit anybody our to go business was insane,” Sydnor said.

Sydnor said they were nervous like many other businesses at the start of the pandemic wondering whether their establishment would sink or float.

“I think our worries were like everybody else, it’s like how are we going to do this,” Sydnor said.

In the end, Sydnor said they decided to do whatever they could to stay afloat.

With their determination, they made changes like re-branding their tiki bar and remodeling.

Sydnor said carryout has also helped a great deal.

“Absolutely it helped our business for sure, to keep it the way it was and even right now that are afraid to come in they can still get a full menu to go,” Sydnor said.

Sydnor adds the support of the community is ultimately what has helped them get through this uncertain time.

“We have an amazing customer base that is just locals and they never let us down,” Sydnor said.

But for other businesses in Cambridge, it’s a different story.

The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Bill Christopher, said there are still plenty of businesses that are struggling.

“I think if you talk to most of the restaurants in the area right now they’re making it, but they’re not doing extremely well,” Christopher said.

But he is hopeful they will come of out this as well and adapt, so they too can get back to business as usual.

“I think they’re all adapting to the situation. They’ve all learned how to do takeout, I think that will actually help them again as we start to go into the winter months,” Christopher said.

When it comes to Snappers, Sydnor said customers being able to take alcohol to go has given them a huge financial boost.

She also said having a consistent staff and consistent product has helped as well.
