Worcester Co. reports highest DUI convictions for second straight year

WORCESTER COUNTY, MD–  For the second straight year, Worcester County has achieved the highest conviction rate for DUI’S in the state.

Worcester County States Attorney Kristen Heiser tells us prosecutors are taking everything type of traffic stop seriously to make sure the community continues to stays safe.

“Our prosecutors work really hard to make sure we take every DUI, alcohol, drug related traffic offense case seriously so the community knows we are focused like a laser on this problem,” said Heiser.

Heiser says this goal could not have been achieved without the help of local law enforcement.

“We have excellent law enforcement in Worcester county and they’re very aggressive about taking these sort of threats off the roadways for our citizens,” said Heiser.

She also tells us from may 2019 to may 2020 they have handled 841 drug and or alcohol related traffic offenses and that they have a 92.7 percent conviction rate in DUI cases.

“We also have strong really well trained prosecutors with a lot of experience in particularly DUI offences that they can count on you know when they build that case when then conduct that investigation we’ll get the job finished in the court room,” said Heiser.

We also reached out to the ocean city police department and they tell us from January to July of 2020, the Department has made forty DUI arrests.

They also tells us the department remains committed and vigilant to keep the roads in Ocean City safe for the community, but looking ahead.

Heiser tells us there is still more work to do and they are continuously working to educate people.

“92.7 isn’t perfect it might be an A but it’s not a perfect score so there is always more work to be done and we are going to continue our coordinated efforts, collaborating with law enforcement to raise that awareness and get people educated,” said Heiser.

Heiser says she is really proud of this accomplishment and she hopes the community recognizes all the good work prosecutors have done.
