DIAA votes to approve condensed schedule; fall sports postponed
DELAWARE – Fall sports in Delaware have been officially postponed, with a timetable for high school sports seasons to be determined. Whether or not football and wresting will be allowed this year will be decided at a later date.
In a 15-0 vote, with one abstaining, the governing body decided the best course of action was the move the fall sports season to begin in late winter.
DIAA’s return to play member school recommendation plan number 2 was the plan the board decided to go with. Under this plan all sports have a six week regular season with two weeks of postseason play.
Under the plan, winter sports would be the first to return with practices beginning on December 14. Competition runs from January 4 to February 15, with all state tournaments running as normal.
Fall sports resume practice February 19, with competition running from March 12 to April 17 for football, and April 21 as the last day for competition for all fall sports. Because of the two-week postseason play, both divisions in football will see only four playoff teams per division.
Spring sports practices resume April 19, with competition from May 10 to June 19.
Dana Carr, from the Delaware Division of Public Health, told the board during their Thursday morning meeting that football and wrestling would not be permitted in Delaware at the moment, but that DPH will revisit the issue in four-to-six weeks.
