Wicomico extends cooling center hours through Thursday

WICOMICO CO., Md. – Officials with the Wicomico County Health Department say they have extended the hours of the county’s cooling center through Thursday because of the extreme heat.

The cooling center, located at the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center, is open from Monday through Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM. There are about 30 tables spaced out inside the center so that people can socially distance. Officials say one person will be allowed at each table and families will be allowed to share a table. There’s also a slightly different check-in process because of COVID-19 which involves a health screening and temperature check.

“If for some reason one of them checks that they are not feeling well, we have a separate location for people that are not feeling well. Everyone has to wear a mask. If someone comes in and they have a medical reason why they cannot wear a mask then they go to a different location,” says Jennifer Johnson with the Wicomico County Health Department. “If they have medications, they need to bring their medications. If they have an animal, once they get here we will call for someone to make sure their animal is taken care of as well.”

If you need transportation to get the the Wicomico County Cooling Center, Shore Transit is available to help you. For more information call 443-260-2300 and select the “dispatch” option.
