Weather Tidbits: Distance from the Sun

This Weather Tidbits focuses on the distance of the sun. The 4th of July was not just Independence Day but also Aphelion Day, where the earth is at its farthest point from the sun. The perihelion takes place in early January, where the earth is at its closest point to the sun by 3 million miles. The sun is less intense and smaller during the aphelion. The most unique fact is that distance does not determine the earth’s temperature. The planet’s warmest month is July due to the strongest rays being in the Northern Hemisphere, where there is more land than water distribution.
