Vehicle pursuit leads to drug charges for two
DAGSBORO, Del. – Delaware State Police arrested two people early Wednesday morning after they found drugs following a vehicle pursuit.
Just before 1 a.m., a trooper observed a Cadillac Catera traveling westbound on Dagsboro Road at a slow rate of speed and halfway on the shoulder. The trooper tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and turned onto Thorogoods Road at a continual low rate of speed. The vehicle then turned onto Iron Branch Road, at which point the trooper saw an object being thrown from the passenger side window.
The driver made numerous traffic violations before stopping in front of a residence in the 100 block of Old Landing Road. Contact was made with the driver, 41-year-old Deshawn Hitchens and passenger, 36-year-old Keiyanda Hopkins. Both were taken into custody without incident.
Troopers went back to the area on Iron Branch Road where the suspects threw suspected drugs out of the passenger’s side window. Troopers found approximately 1.729 grams of heroin and approximately 3.74 grams of crack cocaine on the shoulder of the roadway.
Hitchens was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in a tier 1 quantity, tampering with physical evidence, disregarding a police officer signal, resisting arrest, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, two counts of driving vehicle at slow speed as to impede flow of traffic, and multiple additional traffic related offenses. He was held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $9,354 secured bond.
Hopkins was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in a tier 1 quantity, tampering with physical evidence, and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was later released on a $6,5000 unsecured bond.
