Talbot County Council adopts penalties for those who refuse to wear masks
TALBOT COUNTY, Md. — Talbot County residents who do not wear masks or violate Governor Larry Hogan’s orders for operating businesses safely, could soon face a fine.
On Tuesday, July 28, the Talbot County Council agreed in a 4-1 vote to reinforce Governor Hogan’s executive orders by imposing an additional civil fine of up to $1,000 for those who fail to wear face masks. The same
penalty applies to businesses that violate the governor’s directives on how to safely open businesses.
In a statement, council president, Corey Pack said, “These measures take effect immediately. We are working to keep everyone as safe as possible and are continuing to closely follow the governor’s Maryland Strong Roadmap to Recovery.”
The Council considered a variety of legislative measures designed to address Talbot County’s escalating number of COVID-19 cases. Health Officer Dr. Fredia Wadley had recommended that the Council consider
limiting the number of people allowed at both indoor and outdoor gatherings, imposing civil penalties on those cited for refusing to wear a mask, and empowering the Liquor Board to suspend the liquor license of
violators.
We’re told council members debated the notion of establishing limits on the number of people who can attend both indoor and outdoor events but, they were unable to come to agreement on an acceptable number.
Legislation to address this and other measures was tabled until the August 11 Council meeting when additional information can be obtained.
