Ocean City boardwalk tram service suspended for rest of 2020 season
OCEAN CITY, Md. – The Ocean City Council voted on Tuesday not to run the boardwalk tram at all for the rest of the 2020 season.
The vote was in agreement with a recommendation made by the Transportation Committee. The committee referenced the following issues when it comes to the tram’s services: having to enforce social distancing, reducing the number of riders and possibly splitting up families traveling together, employee interactions with visitors as well as issues that may arise when enforcing required face masks on the tram.
“My biggest concern is having our tram drivers enforce masks. With masks, some people are compliant and some it’s become sort of an attack on their liberty and they are taking it to another level,” says Ocean City Council Member John Gehrig Jr.
Suspending the boardwalk tram service for the rest of the season means the resort town will loose more than half a million dollars in estimated revenue. However, officials say federal grants may help balance that out.
