Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announces suspension of fall 2020 collegiate sports
DELMARVA – On Thursday, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Council of Presidents voted unanimously to suspend all fall 2020 collegiate sports competitions, championship games, and non-championship games.
Delaware State University Director of Athletics Dr. David Gines has emphasized that the suspension of competition does not mean that student-athletes will not be fully engaged when they return to campus.
“As we prepare for the Fall semester, suspended competition affords all of our 18 programs and 450 student-athletes with intensive opportunities to train, practice, and develop their crafts on-campus. We are also preparing for amended seasons and schedules still yet ahead,” Gines said.
At the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Athletic Director Keith Davidson says this is not something they take lightly and that they must put the well-being of their student athletes ahead of competition at this time.
“All of our student-athletes will continue to have their athletic scholarships intact,” Davidson said. “They will return to campus with the rest of the student body beginning August 1 and we have put in place protocols for social distancing, masks-wearing and our athletic training staff will be continually monitoring for symptoms of the virus.”
We’re told the conference currently plans to proceed with winter sports competitions as scheduled, unless health and medical professionals advise otherwise.
