CAC, Salisbury University cancel upcoming fall sports season

Football still undecided thru conference affiliation

SALISBURY, Md- Press Release: SucacThe Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) announced on Tuesday, July 21, the suspension of all Conference competitions, including Conference championships for the fall 2020 season as a result of the continued impact of COVID-19. In response to the CAC decision, Salisbury University has announced that formal conference and non-conference varsity athletics competition by CAC sponsored fall sports will be suspended.

The suspension affects men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and women’s volleyball. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) has not made an announcement regarding its fall status. Salisbury Football is an associate member of the NJAC.

“I understand that the announcement of the suspension of our fall CAC sports is disappointing and it was not an easy decision,” said Dr. Gerry DiBartolo, Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation. “The health and safety of all of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and campus community are of the utmost importance during this unprecedented time. We are continuing to determine the appropriate steps to safely move forward with our athletic and campus recreation opportunities for our student-athletes and enrolled students.”

Salisbury Athletics along with CAC officials will explore in the coming months shifting the fall sports to the spring in accordance with guidance from the NCAA. SU is committed to providing the best experience for our student-athletes as well as fostering a safe and healthy environment once students return to campus.

Salisbury student-athletes will have the ability to engage in various team activities, including practices, sports performance and other health screenings, both individually and in small groups in accordance and guidelines with SU and NCAA recommendations during the fall semester.
