Boats to light up Wicomico River for cancer research

SALISBURY, Md. – This Saturday the Wicomico River will be lit up with boats and it’s all to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The organization is hosting what they’re calling Hope Floats, and inviting boat owners to hit the water with decorated boats.  They’re also encouraging property owners along the river to decorate their docks or property with lights or other decorations.

The boats will kick off from Brew River at around 7 o’clock, then will float down the river headed toward the Green Hill Country Club, all while people can watch along the river.

Volunteers with the event tell 47 ABC they’re happy to find a way to still raise awareness for cancer research even in the midst of the pandemic.

“We also need to continue to raise awareness for cancer in our community, so it’s something that’s affected every single person that you see and every single person that you know,” Michael Wessels said.

We’re also told that – since the event is being held outdoors – social distancing should be relatively easy. Masks are also encouraged.

If you want to register your boat for the event, you can email HopeFloats@gmail.com
