MD police accountability workgroup holds first meeting, discusses de-escalation training
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Maryland General Assembly’s police reform and accountability workgroup held their first meeting Tuesday. The group, which is pushing for reforms to policing practices in the state, discussed a number of issues Tuesday including the bill of rights for law enforcement, de-escalation training – and community policing. In these conversations, officials say the hope is that the General Assembly will come up with ways to make sure policies are enforced in police departments in order to provide transparency and accountability with local law enforcement.
“There are too many times where individuals have been gunned down by law enforcement. Given the mere fact of what we’re dealing with now in the community and in the nation, we need to really take a serious look at these policies that have been implemented, that haven’t had a review in some time,” said Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes (D-District 37A).
The workgroup is expected to meet again on July 8th for their next discussion.
