UPDATE: Investigation into Bear cemetery homicide remains active

BEAR, Del. – Delaware State Police say the investigation into the homicide at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery earlier this month is still ongoing.

Just after 10 a.m. on May 8th, Delaware State Police responded to the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Chesapeake City Road for a report of shots fired. It was learned through investigation that 29-year-old Sheldon Francis of Middletown was responsible for the shooting deaths of 86-year-old Paul Marino and his wife, 85-year-old Lidia Marino, both of Elkton, MD.-

At approximately 11:08 a.m. that day, officers observed Francis running into a wooded area between the cemetery and Brennan Boulevard, in the Brennan Estates development. Officers immediately secured the area. Approximately one hour later, troopers responded to the wood area where Francis was located in the Delaware State Police BearCat Armored Vehicle. As troopers arrived, the BearCat immediately began taking a significant amount of gunshot rounds from Francis, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between troopers and Francis.

During the exchange of gunfire, Francis sustained a gunshot wound by police, resulting in his death. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they have not determined a motive for the incident or evidence indicating that Francis had any connection to the deceased couple.
