Open for business: Weeping Willow Kennels

SALISBURY, Md. – Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, anxiety and uncertainty have filled Jerry Black’s mind as he tries to figure out how he’ll keep his family-owned dog kennel in business.

“I really don’t know if we’ll be here next year. I get up at two in the morning worrying about how we’re going to pay the bills,” said Black.

Although recognized as essential, Black ended up closing Weeping Willow Kennels back in March because he says business just wasn’t the same.

“It was heart-wrenching to have to tell my employees, but they had already figured it out. I mean they looked at the computer screen and they see the dogs going out and nobody coming in.”

On May 1st, Black decided to open up his business once again in hopes of taking care of the animals he’s grown to know and love, only to come to realize that getting back into the swing of things would be much more challenging. With a kennel that can house more than 70 dogs at any given time, only three have been boarded so far.

“I think everybody is just holding back right now because they don’t know what’s going to happen.”

But Black tells 47 ABC, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. He says he’s been getting more traffic on both his website and Facebook page, which means potential customers could soon be waking through his doors.

“So we know people are looking and we know they’re watching the weather and we know they’re trying to figure out where they can and can’t go. But we haven’t seen any of the materialize as far as reservations go just yet.”

And he hopes the more people that know he’s open for business, the better the chance he’ll have to continue to do the job he loves.

“Without the support of the community, there’s no way we could get through it.”
