Hobbit Restaurant, Go Green OC create year-round composting program

OCEAN CITY, Md. – One restaurant in Ocean City is taking steps to be a bit more sustainable and starting a year round composting program.

The Hobbit Restaurant has teamed up with Go Green OC to bring the program to the restaurant.

Organizers tell 47 ABC this project has been in the works for almost two years and they’re excited to see it coming together.

Garvey Heiderman, the owner of the restaurant and an organizer with Go Green OC, tells 47 ABC there are tons of benefits of composting, including better soil and less waste. He says those benefits stretch past the Eastern Shore.

“If we’re keeping this local, and we’re not hauling it up to Pennsylvania where we’re currently sending our trash, then that’s a win from an emissions standpoint,” he said.

Heiderman tells 47 ABC the program will start as soon as the restaurant is able to open back up following safety guidelines set forth during the pandemic.
