Community celebrates Haitian Heritage Month with drive-thru giveaway

MILFORD, Del. – May is Haitian Heritage Month, and to celebrate businesses and organizations all across Sussex County decided they wanted to give back to the community with a special drive-thru giveaway.

The event, which took place at La Red Health Center in Milford, offered free masks and gloves.

The Food Bank of Delaware also took part in the event and information in different languages about COVID-19 was provided to the community.

We’re told people also got to enjoy the music of Haiti as part of the celebration.

“With the Haitian community we have been impacted a lot because of COVID-19 and there have been numerous resources thank God for that, but we want to everybody to know that hey, we are here, we are unified and we are going to serve anyway we can,” said Gertha Jean, event organizer.

Event organizers tell us they’re working on other ideas on how they can continue to safely celebrate Haitian Heritage Month this year.

We’re told Sunday’s event also celebrates Haitian Flag Day, which is tomorrow.
