Chincoteague revitalizing historic firehouse, asking for input
CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. – Chincoteague officials are asking for the public’s input on how they should revitalize the town’s historic firehouse.
Denise Bowden, the Public Relations Officer for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, says the town bought the building last fall from the fire company. The facility was built in the 1930’s and was originally put on the market in the fall of 2018 for $950,000.
Bowden says the town received a grant to study the property in order to see what they could do with it and they’re working with the Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission (ANPDC) to gather input.
Officials are using an online survey to collect suggestions on how to revitalize it. They’re considering a restaurant or event space for the first floor and some possibilities for the second floor include affordable apartments or a hotel.
