Smith Island fire causes phone and internet outage

SMITH ISLAND, Md. – On Friday, a brush fire caused an internet and phone outage on parts of Smith Island.

The Chief of the Ewell Volunteer Department says the brush fire quickly spread as a result of 50 mile per hour winds.

An abandoned home in Ewell ended up catching fire, and burned to the ground. The cable lines to Rhodes Point and Tylerton were melted. No word yet on when their service will be restored.

Firefighters from Crisfield were flown in by Trooper Four to help the Ewell Volunteer Fire Company put out the blaze. Firefighters from Tylerton assisted as well.

We’re told no one was injured as a result of the blaze.

No word yet on what started the brush fire.
