Salisbury doctor speaks on importance of wearing face coverings correctly

SALISBURY, Md. – A local doctor is reminding everyone that while mandatory mask orders go into effect in our area, a mask is essentially useless if you’re not using it correctly.

Dr. Gianelle from Your Doc’s In in Salisbury says it’s critical that the mask cover up to the bridge of your nose and under your chin.

He adds that masks should be tied around the face so that air flow goes through the fabric, not around the fabric.

When wearing a mask, avoid touching your face, including your eyes and nose.

Dr. Gianelle says that if you have a mask on incorrectly, you’re increasing your risk of exposing yourself to the virus.

“One would consider [the effectiveness] zero, but I don’t think it’s that low, but I would say it increases your risk if there is one by 50%,” Dr. Gianelle said, explaining that

Dr. Gianelle adds that for healthcare workers and other people who come into close contact with positive Covid-19 patients, masks have proven to be very effective in reducing transmission.
