Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli helping to feed the hungry with a new charity

DELMARVA–All across Delmarva, businesses are stepping up to the plate to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic and that includes one Delmarva deli.

“We’ve always helped the community, I’ve always helped whatever community I’ve been in and this is just a continuation of that,” Warren Rosenfeld, owner of Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli, said.

Rosenfeld started the charity, Delmarva Gift Cards Fighting Hunger, with two goals in mind, to help restaurants get more business and to help feed people in need in Wicomico, Worcester, and Sussex counties.

“Having a keen eye in the restaurant industry and seeing all the restaurants that were in trouble, as well as families in trouble, I certainly thought there was a way to marry the needs of the restaurants with the needs for feeding hungry families,” Rosenfeld said.

Here’s how it works.

People can ask to buy a gift card from one of the 10 restaurants involved in the program, then Rosenfeld’s matches that gift card with a family in need. From there, the restaurant will make food for the chosen family and volunteers will deliver that food directly to them.

“So far it’s working great, and people are really excited about it and we’ve really helped some wonderful people that are in really some bad times right now,” Rosenfeld said.

Participating restaurants, like Boxcar40, said they are proud to be taking part in such an important service.

“It’s critical at this point, you know for a lot of reasons, like I said, some people can’t access unemployment, some people can’t work,” Paul Suplee, owner of Boxcar40 said.

As for Rosenfeld, he said he has no plans on stopping this effort any time soon.

“We’re all in this together, we will continue with this charity not only through the length of the pandemic if donations permit us to, but once it’s over,” Rosenfeld said.

We’re told they’ve already gotten $2600 dollars in donations over the last eight days.
