PRMC expects to get in-house COVID-19 testing next week

SALISBURY, Md. – 47 ABC spoke with a doctor at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury on Tuesday for the latest on the coronavirus. Dr. Chris Snyder says they’re seeing the number of positive cases increase, as expected, but they’re also seeing people recover.

Dr. Snyder says they’re in the process of developing discharge plans for people who are recovering from COVID-19. Right now, they’re looking at centers that can manage these patients or having them quarantine at home depending on the situation. Dr. Snyder also says they expect to have more testing resources at PRMC in the near future.

“We are seeing more testing kits so we got a bunch yesterday which we are really excited about and we should have in house testing sometime next week once we get the reagent which will be a much more rapid turn around less than an hour per test which that’s just going to be a miracle for us,” says Dr. Chris Snyder, the Chief Quality Officer at PRMC.

Dr. Snyder also says PRMC health care workers are actively studying the drug hydroxychloroquine. He says there’s mixed results when using the drug to treat COVID-19 so they’re only considering it for severe cases. They’re also consulting patients and families on the possible risks and benefits.
