Pocomoke basketball courts getting a facelift

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – The basketball courts behind Pocomoke Middle School are about to get a pretty nice facelift thanks to town and county officials.

Organizers say the idea came up during a city cleanup but there was almost too much garbage in the area to fix in just one afternoon. So the City’s interim town manager Jeremy Mason, Worcester County Commissioners as well as the Worcester County Parks & Recreation pulled together to make it happen.

According to officials, there’s not really a cost to this project because a lot of time and resources are being donated to make this happen. Some of the rims and nets have already been replaced. Meanwhile, the courts will be painted gold and blue this summer.

“It keeps us out of the streets. Ever since the courts came back everybody has been out here. We haven’t been running around in the streets. We’re playing basketball,” says Keandre Nixon, a 7th grade student at Pocomoke Middle School.

“When you shoot the ball and it’s all net it sounds good. Like music to your ears,” says Jymir Schoolfield, a 7th grade student at Pocomoke Middle School.

County officials are also hoping to demolish some of the abandoned houses near the courts on Short Street to make room for a park and playground.
