IRSD starts free meal program while schools are closed

SUSSEX CO., Del. – The Indian River School District started its meal program on Wednesday to feed kids while they remain out of school.

For now, meals are being distributed at ten different sites across the district. To get the food students have to be present but parents do not need to be with them. Each child will get a bag with breakfast and lunch. The district says these school meals are often all some kids get to eat so they plan to keep doing this as long as they can, Monday through Friday.

“Nutrition is everything. Even as a cafeteria manager even when we are in school we always say if you don’t have breakfast you’re really not going to be worth much during the day. Food makes you smart, makes you grow, makes everything work,” says Kim Bacon, the cafeteria manager at Selbyville Middle School.

Additional meal service sites may be added in the future if additional areas of need are identified.
