After 40 years as head coach of Pocomoke boys soccer, Alan Byrd calls it a career

POCOMOKE, Md.- After 40 years coaching Pocomoke boys soccer, head coach Alan Byrd is retiring. He leaves as one of the most accomplished coaches in Maryland’s history.

Byrd retires with eight state championships and four second place trophies in fourteen final four appearances. He first appeared in the championship game in 1985 when the Warriors fell to Francis Scott Key 1-0 and, won his first championship in 1988 when they tied with Hereford 0-0. His Warriors won their first outright championship in 1995 and went on to win six in the 2000’s; 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. His final appearance in the state title game came in 2016 when Pocomoke fell to Pikesville 1-0. His eight state titles is a Bayside and 1A coaching record.

Coach Byrd won multiple Bayside Coach of the Year awards, his most recent coming in 2017. He also won the 2005 Adidas National High School Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.

No word on who will take over the head coaching job.
