Modified ordinance gives more authority to Public Works

BERLIN, Md.- Town officials modified the town’s solid waste ordinance to give more power to the Public Works Department.

At a public hearing meeting last week, town officials discussed allowing the Public Works director to have more authority to enforce regulations and codify that into their solid waste ordinance.

Berlin’s Town Administrator told 47ABC this is probably the biggest change they made to their ordinance.

It will allow the Public Works director to make decisions on what garbage they will pick up.

” I think you have consistency you have one person versus multi yeah there is a written ordinance written policies, but you need an individual that has the actual feet on the ground, Jeff Fleetwood, Berlin Town Administrator, said.

Fleetwood said the ordinance will now be a written acknowledgement that the director can make decisions along with the town on what they won’t be picking up.

He said the town will be advertising more about the items that wont be allowed for pick up like paint, construction material, and tires.
