MDA breaks ground for new Salisbury animal health laboratory

SALISBURY, Md. -An animal health lab that plays a key role in the agriculture industry here on the shore is getting a major upgrade. On Monday, the Maryland Department of Agriculture hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Salisbury Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory. Officials say the new lab will replace the department’s original lab, which was built in 1953 and was in need of major renovations. Officials say these diagnostic laboratories focus primarily on poultry diseases that could impact the industry and keep Marylanders safe. Which is why they say it’s so important that this facility is state of the art.

“It’s much needed and it’s been asked for, for many years. And it’s because of the commitment of Governor Hogan and our legislature that we’re able to do this. It’s really important for agriculture for the economy here on the shore. Poultry is a big industry here and it helps drive the coin,” said Secretary of Agriculture, Joe Bartenfelder.

Officials add that they expect the new facility to be completed by 2021.
