Local churches organize three-week homeless shelter

SALISBURY, Md. – Local churches in the Salisbury area have come together to make sure the homeless can a have a warm bed and warm meals for the next three weeks.

Martin Hutchison, the Pastor at Community of Joy, has teamed up with The Restoration Project, Bethany Lutheran, and Beacon of Light to host the shelter for three weeks.

Hutchison tells 47 ABC that they house around 40 men each night and provide them all with a hot breakfast and a hot dinner.

Hutchison says that anyone is welcome, but it is male only since females are often housed in other locations.

He adds that while he’s thankful the local churches can provide this, he’s always looking to do more.

“I wish we could do more, the purpose of this shelter is really to keep people from dying on the streets at night in the cold, I wish there was a way that we had a permanent shelter that we could help people break the cycle of homelessness,” Hutchison said.

Hutchison says once the churches are done hosting the shelter, another organization will host it for a few more weeks so that the men have a place to sleep.

Hutchison says if any churches are interested in joining, they can contact him at 443-260-0919.
