Latino group pushes to mobilize voters ahead of elections
GEORGETOWN, Del. – “We are trying basically to empower Hispanics through democracy by getting them registered to vote,” said Laneyscha Echevarria Mendez, a member of the coalition Votamas We Vote.
The coalition Votamos We Vote is on a mission to make sure every Latino in Delaware gets their voice heard in this year’s presidential election.
“We are knocking door by door in Hispanic communities, trying to educate them about the importance of voting and also getting them registered right there,” said Mendez.
The group is made up of volunteers who are looking for eligible voters in places like Georgetown to make sure that they are ready for Election Day.
“We often forget that voting really matters and who we put in office is critical to receive that kind of agenda that’s prosperous and beneficial to our community,” said Rony Baltazar-Lopez, a member of the coalition.
Laneyscha Echevarria Mendez from Puerto Rico tells 47ABC although some are undocumented that does not mean they cannot help.
She says they play a huge role by encouraging those who can vote to go out and cast their ballot.
“We’re so powerful when we unify, so even though those people cannot go and vote, they can help us to be a strong and louder voice,” said Mendez.
Volunteers will even go out and meet with graduating high school seniors to make sure everyone in the community is ready to make their voices heard moving forward.
“Right now it’s critical that we ensure that our youth are having those kinds of services at their high schools or their places of communion,” said Rony Baltazar-Lopez.
Members of the group tell me they are also looking to get more volunteers to knock on doors and get more Latinos to vote all across the state.
Members of the coalition will also be tabling in different places to get more eligible Latinos registered to vote. For more information about the coalition, contact the team at 717-951-0905 or click here.
