Harrington Parks & Rec. recieves new building

HARRINGTON, Del. – Harrington’s Parks and Recreation Department officially expanded on Friday,  by almost 9-thousand square feet.

On Friday, the Department was given the keys to an old National Guard Building that sits next to its current building but this process took a while because the building was housing a military vehicle. So lawmakers had to propose and approve a bill that would transfer the facility over to the city. Now that the transfer is complete we’re told the additional space will dramatically expand the department’s community programs and services.

“We have had parents that have gone through the program in the past few years say when are you going to get your building? When are you going to get your building? I said well we don’t know we just don’t know. And now they can take advantage of it so we are really happy about that,” says William Falasco, the director of Harrington’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Officials say this addition will also help people in nearby communities who won’t have to drive as far to access certain sports and programs. The city says a lot of work has to be done before the building can be used and they’ll be applying for grants to help with costs.

State Rep. Shannon Morris, Senator Dave Wilson and former Representative Bobby Outten were joined by Harrington officials at the event. The transfer of the building was authorized in January as part of the legislature’s “mini” Bond Bill.
