Cape Henlopen School District prepares for operating expense referendum

LEWES, Del. – In Sussex County, the Cape Henlopen School District is gearing up for their upcoming operating expense referendum.
The school district’s referendum is scheduled for March 31st and if passed taxpayers would pay $64 more a year. The referendum would generate about 3 million dollars for the district.
According to Superintendent Bob Fulton, prices for transportation, technology and curriculum are going up so this referendum is much needed.
Fulton says the school district also has to keep up with the demands of a growing student population.
“We are growing and the growth is not slowing down and with that comes a lot of concerns and challenges that we’ve been trying to overcome without going out for a separate referendum for current expense, but we can’t wait no longer,” said Fulton.
Fulton says the school district also has to spend money on portable classrooms because of overcrowding issues at the middle schools.
There will be public meetings on the referendum at 6 PM, Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Love Creek Elementary; 6 PM, Monday, March 9 at Cape High Henlopen High School; and at 6 PM, Thursday, March 19 at H.O. Brittingham Elementary.
