Waters hits the buzzer beater for the last second win over Pocomoke
POCOMOKE, Md.- With sixteen points in the fourth quarter, Christian Waters finished the night off with a buzzer beating three for the 71-70 win as Crisfield beat Pocomoke for the second time this season. With the win, the Crabbers improve to 9-3 on the year, the loss drops Pocomoke to 11-3.
Flashback to the third game of the season, Crisfield hosting Pocomoke in what was pegged to be the game of the week. The Crabbers coming in with a 1-1 record while the Warriors were riding high at 2-0, second in the South. The Crabbers took that early season matchup by thirty, 88-54.
It looked to be a different story coming into tonight, the Warriors winning nine of their last ten games and the Crabbers with seven wins in their last nine games. It was a close one early, the Pocomoke taking a four point 12-8 lead after the first quarter. The Crabbers retook the lead to start the second on a nine point run behind six points from Christian Waters and Cortrey Fontaine but the Warriors climbed back and took the biggest lead of the game by either team 23-16 with five minutes to play in the half. Charles Finney led the Warriors with 9 points in the second quarter, 16 in the first half as Pocomoke took the 29-26 lead into the half.
In the second half, D’aron Jones hit two big threes and Finney had six in the quarter as they combine for twelve. Pocomoke went on a 13-2 run to take the eleven point lead midway through the third quarter. After a Pocomoke time out, the Crabbers began to climb back. Rykell Waters and Jaron Smith combined for 9 points to the lead to six to end the quarter, Smith hit a buzzer beater to end the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Crabbers got hot. The Waters brothers, Rykell (8) and Christin (16), combined for 24 of the Crabbers 31 fourth quarter points. But, it was Cortrey Fontaine who gave the Crabbers their first lead of the fourth with 2:31 to play in regulation. The teams went back and forth, nobody leading by more than two in the final two minutes. In the final eight seconds, Finney split two free throws to give Pocomoke the two point lead. Crisfield called a time out with 2.4 and drew up a play to get the ball to their guy with the hot hand. The inbound pass went to Christian Waters and Waters knocked down the game winning three as time expired to give Crisfield the 71-70 win over Pocomoke.
