Man arrested in connection to string of Sussex Co. church burglaries
SUSSEX CO., Del. – Delaware State Police have arrested a man in connection to multiple church burglaries in the Sussex County area.
Earlier this month, police began investigating burglaries to various churches in the Laurel, Seaford, Millsboro, and Georgetown areas including:
- Carey’s United Methodist Church (22053 Careys Camp Road, Millsboro) which occurred during the overnight hours of January 11th
- Saint Johns AME Church (31034 East Trap Pond Road, Laurel) which occurred between January 8th and 11th
- Trinity Church (17237 Phillips Hill Road, Millsboro) which occurred between January 6th and 11th
- Iglesai Evangelica Betana Church (22143 Coverdale Road, Seaford) which occurred between January 11th and 12th
In all of these incidents, the suspect reportedly used force to break glass to exterior windows. Through further investigation, 31-year-old Adam Calloway was developed as the suspect.
On Wednesday, troopers responded to the Sunrise Motel in Seaford, locating Calloway. Crack cocaine and a .22 caliber bullet were seen in plain view inside his motel room and was subsequently taken into custody, however as he was being escorted outside of the motel room, he proceeded to resist arrest and fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later.
A search warrant was obtained for Calloway’s motel room, resulting in the seizure of numerous amounts of what was believed to be stolen property. It was later learned that during the overnight hours the day prior, troopers were called to an address in the 26000 block of Butler Branch Road for a burglary complaint. Items belonging to the victim in that incident were found in the motel room, and Calloway was identified as the suspect in this incident as well as another Seaford residential burglary that happened on January 4th.
Calloway was charged with two counts of second degree burglary, two counts of attempt to commit burglary third degree, three counts of third degree burglary, two counts of felony theft, two counts of attempt to commit theft, theft under $1500, four counts of criminal mischief, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance. It was also learned that he had 13 active arrest warrants out of various agencies in Delaware.
He was held at SCI on $29,507 secured and $11,200 cash only bond.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
