After The Whistle: Sussex Tech’s DaKarai Beasley
GEORGETOWN, Del. – DaKarai Beasley has been a headache for opposing Henlopen teams on offense, defense, and even special teams. Now, the self-described athlete is ready to take his talents to the next level.
Beasley comes from a football family, and rivalries can foster from that atmosphere, like the one with his cousin Khalik, a running back with Cambridge-South Dorchester.
“I got my cousin Khalik, who plays in Cambridge. We always go at it, saying who’s the better one.”
Beasley has had plenty of memorable moments in his high school career, but nothing compares to the exhilaration of winning a state title with Delmar in 2017.
“It was a cool experience, a once in a lifetime experience at the high school level. Not everybody gets the opportunity to win a state championship.”
The senior says his shining moment came when the Wildcats needed a spark in the worst way.
“It was a playoff game against DMA, we were down [13-0], I got a 70-yard kick return, and that brought us back into good field position to punch it in for a touchdown and get us back in the game.”
But Beasley felt a change was in order to help his football future.
“I felt like Tech would be a better place for me. I wasn’t getting as much playing time at Delmar, so that was one of the main reasons for the switch-over… for the most part yes. Because Delmar is a division-II school, and Tech is a D-I, so I could get more looks.”
Now the Raven says he is focused on adding 25 pounds to his frame, and improving his allusiveness, so he can succeed at the next level.
Beasley plans to attend East Coast Prep in Massachusetts. He hopes to show off his skill set there and attract the attention of Division-I schools.
