Tips for keeping your pets safe on New Year’s Eve

GEORGETOWN, Del. – New Year’s Eve is just around the corner and that means fireworks!

Although the display can be exciting, for some pets, the noises are not so fun.

According to members at the Brandywine Valley SPCA in Georgetown, fireworks will often scare dogs and cats and cause them to run away.

We are told pets can perceive loud noises and flashing lights as a threat.

Some ways to keep your fur babies calm is by turning on the television to drown out those loud noises.

We are told you should also keep them in indoors at all times to keep them safe from the fireworks display.

“We never want to see our pets stressed out, so it’s good to know that that is a possibility and what you can do to keep your pet comfortable, and then of course the consequences if they do get out and get away,” said Carla DiGiacomo, community engagement coordinator at the Brandywine Valley SPCA Georgetown campus.

“We do like to educate and let people know what you can do in the event that that should happen,” said DiGiacomo.

It is also critical that pets wear an ID tag, in case they get lost.
