Protecting your identity while online shopping

SALISBURY, Md. – Online shopping doesn’t stop after Cyber Monday. So officials are reminding people to be smart this holiday season.

According to Experian, 52 percent of consumers who’ve had their information stolen say it happened when they were online shopping. Police say the best way to avoid falling victim is to double check that you’re on a legitimate website. They also say if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Officials also recommend using credit cards when shopping online.

“There’s a lot more protection when using a credit card because of the way credit cards are set up and how you’re billed for it. A debit card takes money straight out of your checking or your savings account,” says Lt. Tim Robinson with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

One more tip is to closely monitor your bank account transactions and statements. That way, if you do see something suspicious, you can notify your bank sooner rather than later.
