Proposal would allow dogs onto restaurant patios and decks

LEWES, Del. – If you live in Delaware and you like to bring your dog out to eat with you, newly proposed changes by health officials could allow you to do just that.

Currently, dogs with the exception of service animals are prohibited from food establishments.

The proposed changes by the Division of Public Health would allow owners to bring their dogs to designated outdoor spaces that are not used for food storage or preparation.

Owners would have to bring their dog to a patio or deck without walking through any indoor area, including entrances and exits.

“It means a lot to us to be able to let these people come and sit at our patio and enjoy their time without having to leave their dog in the car or having to leave them at home,” said Shondelle Graulich, events organizer at The Wheelhouse Restaurant and Bar.

“As we said, it’s a part of everyone’s life, and I think it’s important for them to sit somewhere and enjoy,” said Graulich.

Area residents say many restaurants enjoy hosting adoption events, among other activities that support local animal organizations.
